Printing Banners

Using Publisher 2002 with an HP Deskjet 952C I am trying to print a banner on an 8.5"x 44" piece of paper. While both Publisher and HP seem to offer this as a possibility, the best I can due is print the banner on 4 sheets of letter paper and tack them together. What am I missing? I have slavishly followed instructions and also tried variations to no avail. I used to print banners successfully with an older version of Publisher and an older Deskjet. Have the manufacturers taken a step backward or am I just backward

In the page layout, setup your printer first if it has a banner option or user
defined, then setup the Publisher layout, click the custom choice, the layout should
say 8.5 x 44, be sure to tick landscape.
