Printing with graphics - yellow background

2nd posting - any suggestions would be very welcome!

When I insert graphics into a Word 97 document, they display on a pale
yellow rectangular (or square) background.

My understanding is that this should not print - but it does! Happens with
all pictures and graphics. Why? How do I get rid of it?
