Private Events in Entourage

S

Sonal.Sarda

I am using entourage 11.2.3. And I want to make some events in
entourage Private. I can see the private option however it is
disabled. My entourage is configured for a non exchange account.

If I have configured entourge with a non exhange account, will private
events be unavailable to me?

Private is an exchange function. It's possible to do this another way. I'll
ask and get back if I find an answer.

BTW, the latest update for Entourage is 11.3.4. Without the 11.3.3 update
you will not get the fix for Daylight Saving Time.

Sorry, but this is not available even with AppleScript. You'll need to look
at the normal options for privacy like requiring sign in in Entourage for
each Identity or use a new User in System Preferences to keep all of your
data private.

Fast User switching makes it easy for multiple users to share a single
computer. It's much easier I think than creating multiple Identities in
Entourage since you don't have to quit all Office applications to switch
Identities.

Diane's already answered your question but thought I'd add one tidbit.

The "Private" designation is to hide items from the view of others over
a network, not on the computer itself. That's why this is an Exchange
only feature. Therefore, if you're the employee of a manager who insists
on being able to see your calendar to "know where you are" then you can
mark your appointments for upcoming job interviews as "private" so that
your manager doesn't see them.

Hope this helps! bill

Thank you Diane and William

We are configured against a non exchange account and also have a sync
application which syncs data between our calendar server and
Entourage. Does Entourage plan to introduce support for creating
private events irrespective of the server in question (something on
the lines of what OL does today)

Thank you

I would say absolutely not.

"Private" only has meaning when you're sharing from a central remote point,
i.e. a calendar server. On a single account where all the events are yours,
there's no point in that designation.

An event can't be anything but 'private'
in a non-exchange calendar, since nobody can be a subscriber to that
calendar, so the event can't be seen by anyone else.

Apart from that, there is no 'private' property of an event that is
accessible to AppleScript, so no, you can't mark an exchange event as
private by script, much less a non-exchange event.

Thank you very much for your responses.

Our server does support sharing and delegation. It also supports
private events. So when I sync against Entourage (through the sync
engine) these events which are private on server are not reflected as
private on Entourage. Further when such events are updated at
Entourage and then synced to server, Entourage re-sets the private
attribute (as can be observed through syncrospector). Any plans on
changing this behavior?

I'm confused, you started out by saying this wasn't on an exchange setup.
Now it seems you are. Ask again and put exchange in the subject so the
exchange experts will pick up on the message.

Hi Diane

We are not using a Microsoft Exchange server. We are using a Mirapoint
Calendar server. This Mirapoint server supports private attributes,
delegation as well as sharing. We also have a connector that allows us
to sync data from our Mirapoint calendar server to Entourage on Mac.
The problem is that for private events, our server shows the private
atribute correctly. After syncing this data from the server to Mac,
sync engine also shows that the private attribute has been set in the
sync engine (as verified through syncrospector).

However, Entourage still doesn't show this attribute in its UI. Given
that Entourage syncs with the sync engine, why is Entourage not
showing this private attribute when it has actually been set correctly
in the sync engine?

(I have configured Entourage to use Mirapoint mail account as a
primary account. )

This is totally out of my realm of expertise. ASAIK, this is the first
question about using Entourage with the Mirapoint Calendar server.

You might try asking again using "Mirapoint Calendar server" in the subject
to see if anyone that is scanning the newsgroup with experience using
Mirapoiint will respond.

'doesn't see them' is a little misleading - they will be visible as 'not
available' blocks, but no details will be accessible to another person.

I would suspect that your set up is only used by a handful of customers, so
unfortunately there's not much push to get a change like this made (I also
suspect that mirapoint is using the 'ical' options to share data, and AFAIK
there is no 'private' tag in the ical standard - I could be off-base with
both of those assumptions.

However, if you feel strongly about this, you can send feedback to the
developers on this issue. Use the last menu item under the 'Help' menu -
"Send Feedback on Entourage". This message will go directly to the
developers. The more people that request this feature the more likely it is
to be implemented.
