Problem importing from Mac mail

Hi,

I am beginning to use Entourage. From apple Mail I imported accounts
successfully. When I imported messages from Apple Mail, the screen went
through all the motions, familiar email titles flashed by, I was told
messages had been imported successfully, but there was nothing imported into
Entourage. I was not instructed to restart. What went wrong?

Thanks,

Rafael

Entourage 2004 was released in November 2003, before Tiger (April 2005)
existed. Its Mail importer therefore was designed for Mail 1 in Panther and
Jaguar. Mail 2 in Tiger has completely changed the structure of its mail
folders and files (so that Spotlight will work): they are now XML files
rather than true MBOX files.

What you need to do is go into each folder in Nail. Select all messages
there. (It's a bit dumb you have to select the messages rather than the
folder, but you do.) Then go to File --> Save As, and set the Format popup
to "Raw Message Source". Also change the name in the Save As field to the
name of the folder (it has the subject of the first message in the folder!)
and add the .mbox extension. That will save the messages (the folder,
really) into an .mbox file.

When you've saved all of them, select one of these .mbox files (if it has an
Mail mailbox icon rather than an Entourage one). Do a Get Info (cmd-I). Set
"Opens With" to Entourage 2004, and then click the "Change All" button. Now
the icons on all the .mbox files change o an Entourage MBOX icon.

One by one, drag each .mbox file into Entourage: you can drag them into
specific folders to make it a subfolder, or just into On My Computer. Or you
can double-click the .mbox file, which will do the same thing. If a file has
the same name as an existing Entourage folder (like "Inbox") it will add a
..1 to the name. After importing, you can select all messages and Move them
(Move button or Message --> Move To) to the real Inbox, or wherever, and
then delete the empty folder afterwards.

I have to completely disagree with the last posting. I am running
Entourage 11.2.1 (051004) and Tiger 10.4.5..

I just successfully imported my entire Mail.app Messages and Rules and
Accounts without a hitch.

The tricks tend to include rebuilding your mailboxes on Mail.app before
trying the import.

Checking the disk/file priv's are ok, (Use disk utility to check/fix this
unless you are ok with fsck)

Disable any accounts so no email downloads are going on during the import..

This should help..

Oh, that's good. I think that must mean that one of the updates (probably SR
2 but maybe SR 1) updated the Mail importer, which is a good thing.

So I'd also check that you have the latest update to Entourage - it's
currently at 11.2.1. (11.2 was SR 2). If not, go to Help --> Check for
Updates. (Or launch the Microsoft AutoUpdater, which does the same thing).

Honestly, the original release version of Entourage 2004 (11.0) could most
definitely not import the new Mail 2 mbox and emlx files in Tiger - since
they didn't exist yet. Either the 11.1 or 11.2 update (probably the latter,
much more extensive) must have made it possible.

Sounds reasonable wrt to SR revs. Now of course not all has been fixed,
rules don't know where to go relative to accounts and not all accounts are
quite there (but enough to get going)

What I think is interesting is the direction of Office 12 to a standard xml
file format for all apps. (Yes Mac users can crow about all native apps
being XML compliant from the get go). So I wonder (with tongue firmly in
cheek) whether there is the possibility of a universal mbox format in the
offing that would allow true interoperability. It's in no vendors revenue
interest, I know, but... A seriously compelling reason to move to an
integrated package such as Office.

But when thinking about it, at the end of the day, Bill G. May not think he
gets much revenue from the Mac community, but between those of us who run
Office 2004, + VPC + the OS on VPC, plus the various MS apps on top of the
OS on top of VPC, it's probable he makes more money from OS X users than
native windows users.... Food for thought... Hands up who doesn't feel like
a second class citizen in the eyes of Redmond???

I have Entourage v 11.2.1

Thanks for your answers.

After I wrote my question last night, I tried importing again and instead of
checking all four boxes‹‹Messages accounts rules and signatures‹‹I simply
checked 'Messages' and the messages imported successfully.

I don't know anything about rules and signatures yet so they're not
important (pun?) to me.

What I can't seem to import now is addresses. Any clues about that?

The
Messages
accounts
rules
signatures

doesn't to include addresses
