Problem Installing/Using MSOP2003

ChristinaP252

My new computer came with a pre-installed trial version of MSO2003 Standard.
I have not initiated this trial version. I'm trying to install MSO2003
Professional. The install is complete but when I try to open up an
application (i.e., Excel) what appears to be the set-up window for the trial
version of Standard opens. The Product Key information I have will not work.
In other words, it seem that even though I correctly installed Professional
Edition, when I open up Professional, there is something automatically
opening up the trial Standard version instead. HELP!!

I did not. Is this recommended? I was assured by the salesman at the store
that I did not need to uninstall the trial version.

Perhaps that salesman can explain why you are have this problem then?

I called the store this morning and spoke with the tech. people. The man
assured me that the trial version didn't need to be installed and he had no
idea why the Standard version was being pulled up. He basically said it was
'user error', which it isn't! Thanks.

Hi Christina,

The Office 2003 trial edition is already installed, just not activated. When you have two different editions within the same (2003)
series, things can get a bit confusing/messy.

Basically, yes, you should uninstall the trial edition, then restart the PC then install the edition you want to use. In this case
you may want to do a repair/reinstall of the Professional Edition through Add/Remove Programs in the Windows control panel after
removing the trial edition and restarting the PC.

I was going to make a rude comment about the salesman but I've decided that
I'll take the higher road this time. (Maybe I'll take after another MVP - he
refrains from rude comments on Sunday. Maybe I'll take Mondays. That gives
the general population two days with one less smart @ss. )

If you read back thru the archives in this group (and a few others) you
would see that MANY people have had problems when they didn't uninstall the
trial version before installing another version. Perhaps that salesperson
only knows what he's read in product spec sheets. These newsgroups deal with
what happens in real life. I can tell you that I've uninstalled that blasted
trial version from new systems and then loaded another full version of
Office and they work quite well.
