hi, i let my inbox get big and so i culled nearly all the emails. but
the size of the main identity remains 1.47GB despite whatever i do to
reduce the number of emails.

i need to back up main identity on a cd-r and the cd-r is onlt 700mb
in size.

could anyone think what i'm not doing right?

If you want to reduce the size you have to compact the database after
deleting the messages. (Otherwise the database remains the same size and
then starts "filling up" or overwriting the emptied space. Normally that's a
good thing to leave, but in the case of your enormous 1.5 GB size I can see
why you'd want to reduce it.)

Hold down Option key when launching Entourage and choose "Compact"
(Entourage 2004) or "Typical" (Entourage X or 2001).

When done you'll find a "Backup Identity [date stamp]" (2004) or "Old
Database" (within identity folder, in X and 2001) which you can trash after
a few days when you're sure all is OK.
