Problems sending/receiving email

About a day and a half ago, my iMac stopped receiving or
sending email. I get an error message that indicates that
the computer can't find the appropriate server both when
it tries to retrieve email messages and send them.

My ISP (Comcast) tells me that the problem isn't on their
end and I've double checked all the settings and they do
appear to be correct. I called Apple and they tell me it
isn't a problem with the computer.

Apple's suggestion is that the problem is with Entourage
and they suggested that I reinstall everything on the
computer. That is a step I'm not quite ready to take,
since it seems like an odd explanation.

Any ideas on what caused the problem and how to fix it?
