problems with contacts in distribution list

Product:
MS Outlook 2003 (office small business edition)

Issue:
When double-clicking on contacts within distribution list, it brings up
either one of the mail messages sent by the contact or an contact entry form.
When pressing "Update Now", it brings up a dialogue box with 3 choices:
remove/try to resolve first then remove/? .

Is there something to fix this from ever occuring again?
