Product key

My computer came with MSOffice small business 2003 preinstalled. I
purchased an activation key in order to convert the product. I thought that
it would be wise to purchase the CDs also, in case I had to reinstall it one
day. This product is OEM software. I input the product key to convert and
the system tells me that it is not valid. What is going on?
