Project Center Email not automatically showing up in Project

If I create a Project and add contacts with email addresses, the only
way incoming or outgoing emails show up in that project is if I
actually assign that individual email to the project.

I thought this was supposed to be automatic. Am I missing something?

There's a setting that controls whether that happens automatically or
not. Look in the Properties for the Project, under Maintain.

That is already the setting for all my projects in Project Center, but
still, none of the emails show in the appropriate project
automatically.
