Project Corruption

Hi all,

I recently experienced a project getting corrupted. Does any one know what
activities can cause a project to get corrupted? I've read a couple postings
where it says that having special characters in the project name can cause
the corruption. Is there a list somewhere? Also, does project corrupt only
apply to projects in Project Server or can projects get corrupted even when
Project Server is not used?

Thanks,
CLin

Hi CLin,

Project files can become corrupt for a number of reasons. The FAQ page
in my signature line gives some great tips. To list a few of the
possible reasons for file corruption:

Circular references within a project file -- frequently created when
summary tasks are linked.
See FAQ # 48 "Summary Task Linking"

Resources assigned to Summary tasks and subtasks and then trying to use
Resource Leveling.
See FAQ #49 "Summary Task Resources" at:

Also, projects can become corrupt because of the way Project stores
data. See FAQ # 43 "File Bloat? - Might be corruption"

Using resource pools incorrectly may also cause corruption of the pool
file.

To your question about corruption only happening on Server versus
non-server use, I can attest to non-server use corruption as well.
