protected forms repopulating fields

Salesforce sends a protected form back to us with data in
fields. We want to make a text change in the protected
area on the form. We unprotect it & make the change to
the contract, but then the fields that the rep had filled
in are cleared when we reprotect it. So office gal copies
& pastes all fields back into a "new form" from the
modified saved template. Lots of fields to copy & paste
so too much room for error and lots of time spent doing
this.
Is there a way to reapply a modified change in a
protected template without losing data in fields??

Much thanks. Forms seem to be intact now when changes are
made and password protect is back on.
