protection password - How to remove it form a 2007 Project File?

J

Justin

I am trying to un-password a file that was created in Project 2003. We
recently upgraded to Project 2007. This password was to block other users
from changing the file and to allow access to the file. Any input would be
appreciated.

Hello Justin,

In order to remove the password from the file, you'll need to open the
file. *******Make a copy of the file before attempting the next steps
and make sure you have SP-1 installed on Project 2007*****
Open the file, supplying the password.
In Project 2007, choose File > Save As to open the Save As dialog.
Click the Tools button in the lower left corner of the Save As dialog
box and select "General Options".
Click and drag to select all marks (*****) in the protection and/or
write reservation password area.
Save the file with the same name and choose to overwrite the original
file.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

I'm using Project 2007 with SP1 and have not found a way to SaveAs either as
original filename or new file name without either original protection
password or a newly supplied one.

Deleting the ******* in General Options only succeeds in the saved file
retaining the original protection password.

Hello Justin,

Okay, obviously I'm not following you completely. You have a Project
2003 file with a write-protection password. Do you know what the
password is? If you don't know the original password you cannot
remove it either using Project 2007 or Project 2003.

If you know the write reservation password then removing the **** in
the manner I noted below will remove the password, but if you can't
open the file read-write without the password, there is not a method
to remove it.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

M$ password protection protection on files is pretty low level security.
There are advertised services, or at least used to be, in the back of PC
Magazine and PC World that would remove the password for you. Some years
ago, it was about $500 for this service. Probably more now.
My advice is to go to any teenager you know and ask him who the best local
hacker is. They all know. Get the kids number, and for the price of a video
game, he'll break that code in 10 min or less.
Hope this helps in your world.

Hi Julie,

There is confusion here. Perhaps I should have started a new thread. I have
a password protected file and I know the password. I can save it as a file
with a diffrent password, but not as a file without a password.

Deleting the ******* in General Options only succeeds in the saved file
retaining the original protection password. When it is reopened, it still
asks for a password.

Hi Justin,

Okay, thanks for the additional information. All I can say is that
there is something odd with the project file you are using. In my
experience, opening a file with a write protection password, supplying
the password and then File > Save As, removing the all the ***** in
the password field, saving and overwriting the file, removes the
password.

I'm sorry that is not working in your circumstance and I'm afraid I'm
out of alternatives. Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance.

You are welcome to send the zipped file to me by email (giving me the
password of course) and I'll see if I can remove the password. My
address is prjng AT maine.rr.com

Thanks for the offer Julie. The persistent password wasn't really causing
much inconvenience since it was known and could be changed, only puzzlement..
I was going to send you a zip of this odd file so that you could share my
intrigue, so made a copy with sensitive data deleted / anonymised. Guess
what, somewhere along that process, the password has disappeared ! I give up
- I'll put it down to experience / categorise as "too hard" I think :)
