No. You will need to use Outlook 2003 to export to a .pst file created in
the Outlook 97-2002 compatible format.

I was afraid of that, I was trying to convert the pst
folder into a comma or tab delimited file and an excel
file, just wouldnt work---

Only when you do, do NOT export. That will only create a file in the new
format and provide no option for the old format.
You must instead create a NEW PST and designate Outlook 97-2002 format. Then
copy your information into it.
