Pub 2002 key

I may be in a bit of a pickle. I am about to reformat my hard drive and go
with Win XP Pro. Normally I don't upgrade OSs however the wireless
gateway/cable modem doesn't like playing with 98SE.

I've been pulling my disks out for reload and making sure everything that
should have an authorization code of any sort does. Well, I have my code for
Publisher 2000 but not for 2002. To make matters interesting, I received it
from Gateway (former employer) as a "prize" for completing a series of
trainings on MS products. It was the OEM version of Office XP SB.

Since I haven't done the reformatting yet, is there someplace in the
registry where the code is? I'd sure love for one of you gurus to say "Why
yes it is! And it can be found..."

Any takers?

OOOOOH!!

Did I find it? I found a 25 digit "ProductID" key in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{blah
,blah,blah}

Is that it?? (Please say yes - please say yes)

Nope (and - I'll put this down to a senior moment - the fact the string has
WINDOWS in it should indicate that it's the Product ID for WINDOWS! ;o).
JoAnn, please download Aida32 from
http://www.aida32.hu/aida-download.php?bit=32 (don't worry the site's in
English!) The product ID is *NOT* the same as the installation ID - the key
cannot be located in the registry - but Aida32 will recover it for you.

Blessings of the morning,

Perdi

I'd squawk about the senior moment crack if it weren't
true.

I "assumed" (or rather hoped) Windows meant Windows-based
program. It specifically stated Publisher 2002 and listed
a product code. As it is, I already reformatted and any
hope of harvesting the info is gone.

Anyone have a phone number for Microsoft? I know it's not
free but even a $25 phone call is better than nothing at
all.

Oh sorry, Jo, I didn't realise you'd formatted, sorry...(. I'm not really
sure what MS can do (and it's a damned sight more than $25 these days -
unless we Brits are being ripped - it was £50 per incident over here the
last time I checked). They don't assist with OEM software, which is,
obviously, what you have. You may have to peruse it with Gateway.

I tried...I'd strongly recommend you download Aida32 and keep it for later -
it's donation-ware which means you don't have to pay for it if you don't
want to.

I have a Gateway, and I had to pay for my version of Publisher, which was a part of
the Small Business suite. All the certificates and product codes were shipped with
the computer. It maybe among your papers...

I too have a Gateway (two of them) as well as being a former employee. My
problem is that I was given the software by Gateway for successfully
completing some MS training. It is the standard OEM issue. I know the
documentation is "somewhere" but the question is where. I'm not known for my
organizational skills. :-(

I was hoping to find the legal way to do this. I have a friend who told me
an easier, illegal way. He doesn't understand why I won't do that
considering I already own the software. Why is it that playing by the rules
is so darned challenging at times? There are rewards to doing so, aren't
there?

I would actually say that you would be within your rights to obtain a new CD
key for this software, by whatever means. But don't quote me on that (I
have no idea as to the legality of that statement)
It's just like backing up your CD media - if you lose the originals, you
will be using a copied version of Publisher, but you will be within your
rights.

I thought I sent a follow-up but it was late and maybe I didn't.

I called Microsoft and they issued me a new product key. No problem
whatsoever. I had to pay for the phone call but that was maybe a 15 minute
long distance call. Not a big deal.

I know it seems like I "should" be entitled to getting a new key in whatever
manner but that same techniques is used when people don't have a legitimate
copy of the software. I really prefer to steer clear of that.
