Publisher 2003 Bug: Print Preview shows deleted objects.

K

KA Spencer

Print preview in Microsoft Publisher has a serious error: it shows deleted
objects. This ocurs whether the changes to the page have been saved or not.
The objects are displayed in the preview but not on the edit page, and so
they cannot be editied out.
This is a (yet another) serious error in Microsoft software and requires
urgent correction.

I've never had that happen to me nor have I ever heard of anyone else having
that problem.

I'd suggest two different steps:

1. Run Design Checker and see if anything pops up.

2. Send to someone else with Publisher to see if they have the same problem.
I'm willing to take a look at it if you'd like.

Couldn't duplicate the problem here either.

This happens once in while, especially if you are creating a booklet. Do you
have images saved in the Design Object menu?

K

KA Spencer

Thankyou for that, Mary. My comments on your reply are:

Yes indeed it is a booklet.
The objects intruding into the Print Preview of several pages are actually
advertisements whuich have been moved to other pages, but which seem to
appear superimposed onto the intended content of certain pages. They do NOT
appear to be on the pages when editing the pages.
Even if the intended objects are cleared from the page, so that the page is
blank, the rogue objects are still present on the print preview. (And we have
checked: the same issue arises in Publisher 2002 as well.)
One other thing: it does not seem as though the rogue objects are printed to
the PDF output file. All the same it is highly irritating that the
superimposition of these phantom objects prevents us from getting a proper
print preview of the publication.
Finally, we have no "My Objects" saved in Design Gallery.
In theory I could send you a copy of the publication, although it is 23Mb+.

I'd be glad to look at your booklet.

Could be your video driver, strange things happen in Publisher when the drivers
are going bad. It could be your printer driver as well.

It you select a different printer, for example, Generic Color PS for Commercial
Printing, does the same print preview happen?

To test if your video driver is the culprit, in the control panel, display
folder, settings tab, advanced button, troubleshoot tab, slide the acceleration
down a couple of notches. If that helps, go to the manufacturer's web site of
your graphics card and look around for an updated driver.

Occasionally when I insert a graphic in a booklet and crop it, the print preview
will show the uncropped image bleeding over to the adjacent page. If the phantom
images aren't printing then that is a plus.

Sending your file as a .zip may make it smaller. Turning off the picture full
display may help too.

Mary

Many thanks again for your reply.

I have set the graphics acceleration to zero, but the problem persists - it
doesn't change anything at all.

I have also tried setting the printer to "Microsoft Document Image Writer",
and to the "Microsoft Generic Publisher Colour Printer" (we don't have a
Microsoft Colour PS Printer driver available) , but the behaviour was the
same.

The way the page builds up in Print Preview seems to suggest that it is
Publisher that is superimposing other page content on top of the page being
displayed, rather than an image persisting in video RAM.

If the results of these two attempts don't help you to give me any further
advice, I will send you the offending document.

Regards and thanks

Ken.
