Seems like a small thing but I'd really like to know how to do this.
All I want to do is enter a quarterly event. You can set by days but
90 days won't give you the first day of the month, and there's no
option for scheduling by month. It's very tedious to enter each one
manually but I see no other way to do it. Have I missed something?

Try:

* 'new event' ; 'Occurs' -> Custom...
--> You'll get the 'recurrent event' dialog.

In this dialog choose the recurrence pattern:
* 'monthly';
* the 'first' 'day' of every '3' months
--> or the recurrence as you prefer.

This should do the trick.
