Question about unread items icon

Microsoft Outlook 2000 SR-1

I use spam filtering software that automatically marks spam for me and then
a rule that moves spam to a mail folder. Is there some way to either turn
off the unread items icon that appears or better yet have Outlook ignore new
messages that are put into the spam folder?
