Question on 2003 Word and Excel

A user in my office has a problem when he is using either Word or Excel
2003, When he goes to open a file from the Word or Excel menu bar it takes
about 20 seconds for the explorer window to open , then about 15 seconds for
a folder to open and then 10 seconds to open a document. If he goes
directly from Windows Explorer to the file it opens normaly (immediatley).

Running Ad-Aware and Spybot as well as Nortron Antivirus had no effect on
this problem. I have reset all of the short cuts. I am at a loss as to
what to try next. Can anyone help?

He is running Windows XP - SP2 and Office 2003. This is a relatively new
problem within the last 3 weeks. Accordign to the user he has not
downloaded or installed any new software.

Thank You

Try Registry Mechanic or PC Doctor to clean up all remnants that maybe
causing this delay. Both of those promise to speed up performance.

Two possibilities come to mind:

1. Disable the Office Plugin that comes with Symantec/Norton AntiVirus.
See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329820 "How to use Office
programs with the Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in" for more info.

2. Disconnect any mapped network drives that are not currently
available. Look in My Computer for these.
