Can anyone tell me why I get a QuickList category in Entourage after
syncing?

I also have one category in particular that I can not delete.

Any clues appreciated.

This is a category imported fromt he handheld.

The only non-deletable category should be the junk category. If you have
renamed 'junk' to something else, you are likely to get all sorts of odd
things happening...

I did rename it as I don't need to rename any tasks/calendar events/projects
as junk. I have since renamed it back to junk for what it is worth but am
unsure why the "junk" category gets such a privileged status. Why can't it
be deleted like any other category?

Because with the Junk Mail Protection turned on, it assigns the Junk
category to anything that is discerned to be spam by the Junk Mail Filter.
If the category didn't exist, the whole thing would break. Also far too
complicated would be some sort of attempt to recreate the category if you
turned the JMP on again. That's because Entourage can't depend on anything
so ephemeral as the name of the category which might be different not only
if you changed it (to Spam or Junk E-mail, or something totally unrelated)
but also in other languages in which Entourage is released. It goes by ID.
Junk category is category id 1 (you can discover that by AppleScript). If it
were deletable, then when you recreated a Junk category it would be
category id 41, or whatever. Also when you do a Rebuild, database items can
(presently) be assigned different ID numbers (usually filling up gaps made
by previously deleted items) but Junk category will always be id 1 since
it's set that way irrevocably.

There is a method to the madness. Having a Junk category can also be useful
in ensuring that any person created in the Address Book with his/her email
address and assigned the Junk category will never, ever appear in the Most
Recently Users list of email addresses when you start typing a recipient's
name. People have found this particularly useful when someone they know has
changed their email address but keeps showing up higher in the list with the
old address. (Just make a separate contact with the same name but only the
old email address and assign it the junk category, and it will never get in
your way when sending messages.) If you have no use for it, just don't use
it.

Because rules criteria based on the status 'junk' rely in that category
being assigned, the JMF filter also needs to use that category to mark a
message as junk. It's a 'reserved' category, in effect, but not in
actuality.

I consider the ability to rename it to be a bug (or at least, undesirable
behaviour).
