I would strongly suggest that RAG does not relate only to %Complete. I can
be 99% complete and be ahead or behind schedule depending on other factors
such as planned completion dates and time now. I can be 2% complete and
brilliantly green.
I suggest using the Schedule Performance Index [SPI] which also requires
costed baseline and resources assigned to the project. It can reasonably be
faked by using 1 resource at $1/hr assigned to all activities. [SPI]
measures the ratio of how much work you actually performed (ie %Complete)
compared to the promised work per your baseline. Search on "Earned Value" in
the help system for all kinds of information too much to include here.
Now that the sermon is over, you can easily create RAG indicators using a
spare text field. First insert a spare text field, such as Text1. Right
click on the column, select "Cusomtize Fields". For the Custom Attributes
select Formula and enter [%Complete]. In the same dialog box, select
"Graphical Indicators" and establish some test criteria and select an icon to
display (such as RAG circles). Be judicious in your testing becuase Project
will display the color icon that satisifies the first test that meets the
criteria. The tests are executed from the top down.
Another field to look at is [Status] which is a bit narrower in focus
becuase it will only tell you information based on the %Complete compared to
the desired %Complete as of 12:01AM on the [Status Date]. It is more a RG,
not RAG.
In closing, rather than using [%Complete] in the [Text1] formula, we use
[SPI]. No macro required.
