random interruptions by installer

In the last couple of days the computer has been plagued
by interruptions of splash screens attempting to
reinstall Standard Office 2003 which I have been using
(the Education version of )without difficulty till now
for months. It says it's configuring Office (as if I'd
never installed it) or demands that I put the original
installation disk of Standard Office 2003 because of an
error labeled SKU112.CAB. Attempts to cancel out of this
window usually fail and if I finally do get past them the
Windows programs may go into a freeze.

What happened and what can I do about this?

Thanks,
JT

Hi JT,

What is the full text of the error message please?

This could be caused by a damaged or missing MSOCache folder but I'm
not sure without more information. You might try using the LIS (Local
Installation Source) utility to remove the Office installation source,
reinstall Office in order to recreate the MSOCache folder.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...a3-695b-42c3-9045-b812ba0fed3e&DisplayLang=en

Now, if you recently deleted this folder or its contents then that
would explain the error. If you no longer want the local installation
files then you still need to use the utility to safely remove your
LIS. This will also modify the Windows Installer entries so the folder
location is no longer referenced.

Beth,

I am having a similiar problem. I am running office 97. Last couple of weeks, I try to open a program (most of them) and 'Windows Installer' pops up and prompts me to insert 'Microsoft Office Professional with Frontpage' disk, which I have never had. I can cancel this and the program does finally open.

Hi Shelli,

Did Office some preinstalled on your computer? If you never had Office
w/FrontPage then you might try zapping the Windows Installer entries
in the Registry and reinstalling Office.

Obtain the following utility and use it to remove only the reference
to Office. Once that is complete then you'll need to reinstall Office
to point the Windows Installer to your installation CD:

Note you do not want to remove the Installer Reg entries if you do not
have your installation media.
