randomly replaced images

After carefully constructing a complex presentation -100 slides with
many images - I compress - save and close. Upon reopening at least ten
of the images were shuffled around. Throughout the presentation I had
composed pages only to find after reopening, many images had been
shuffled. buggy files? help.

Can you provide some additional information on this one:
What version of PPT?
What OS?
What format are the images?
And although it should not be cause of this issue, can you confirm all
images were RGB (vs CMYK)?

Thanks, I will have a look at the files and version when I get back to
work. I should learn to make sure all are RGB files before
inserting.

Any chance that you linked the images instead of inserting them? If you are
using 2003 and exceeded the linking area allotment, it could have scrambled
them.
