OK I solved it. My keychain setup was a little complex anyway since
I'd imported one from my last mac (but it was working before!). I
went to the keychain access tool in utilities, and used "keychain
first aid" (makes sense). Somehow the port setting had got corrupted
on the mail accts.
Don't ask me how... But the repair fixed the problem.
