To focus on my problem...

When I filter cells in a worksheet, the status bar in the
bottom left of my screen normally tells me how many lines
have been filtered out of the total lines available...why
would this suddenly stop working so that nothing is
displayed?

Check if View -> Status Bar is checked.

The number of records display is deleted whenever a change is made to
the worksheet that could make the current filter invalid (e.g., a cell
value in the filtered range is changed).
