read/write error? help please!

i have entourage X on my mac. i cannot start up entourage at all. it
says i have a read write error and to rebuild, so i try to rebuild the
data and it still cannot open it. how can i fetch all my emails and
address out of there when i cannot open the program. i know they are
somewhere on my hard drive and for the time being i am using
thunderbird which i have been unsucessful at importing anything into
it. my room mate can use the same entourage program so it appears just
to be my account. please help! thanks, lori

If it is saying you have a read/write error it is possible that there is
disk level corruption. Try verifying/repairing the disk with disk first aid.

Also, it may be one of the prefs files that cannot be read/written. Remove
the 'Microsoft' folder from ~/Library/Preferences and try again (where '~'
is your Home folder)

my folders are wherever my computer puts them :). which folder am i
looking for? one called home or? i have tried disk warrior and it still
won't open up. everything else is working well and even my room mate
can access her email on the same program, same computer. it asks me to
hit the rebuild button so i did and it told me it couldn't be compacted
and a (-40) error. i don't know if this number means anything to you or
not. thanks, Lori

The 'Home' folder is your default system folder - the one bearing your login
name, with the icon of a house. In there is a folder called 'library', and
in there is a folder called 'preferences. The 'shorthand' way of writing
this is '~/Library/Preferences.

Look in that preferences folder for a folder called 'Microsoft'.
Move it to the desktop.
Log out of the system & back in again, then try to start Entourage again.
