Rebuild database script

G

Gnarlodious

Since I can't exceed 12 MB in Entourage's database I've written 2 scripts
that help me automate the purging:

http://homepage.mac.com/gnarlodious/EntourageCompactDatabase.sit

I have a schedule run once a week to compact, and the second script to
delete the old databases could theoretically be scheduled also for totally
automated purging.

These 2 scripts can go in Entourage's Script menu. Just bear in mind that if
you are running Entourage prior to 10.1.4 you will need to uncomment 3 lines
in the Rebuild script, which is needed to forcequit the Office Database.

Feedback/criticism/ridicule welcome.

Hi, Rachel

As I'm sure you've been told many times, Entourage's database limit in
10.1.4 is 4 GB, not 12 MB. That's some 330 times bigger. Do you have a disk
space limit or something?

PLEASE always state which version of Entourage you are using - 2001 or X.
It's often impossible to answer your questions otherwise.

Nope. All I know is that Entourage crashes when my database hits about 12
MB, a weekly purging is the most expedient solution. The crash will
invariably happen when I am downloading a bunch of mails from IMAP which in
turn leaves a mess to clean up. Possibly related is a chronic problem with
IMAP folders showing unread messages but displaying none. CM's "Empty Cache"
or "Purge Deleted Items" can sometimes fix it.

Am I the only one?

Have you tried rebuilding your database?
Am I the only one?

It's certainly a new complaint to me.

The weekly rebuild has prevented the crashing for 6 weeks or so, since I am

doing about 10MB a week it's a weekly chore. There is 7GB free on the
partition so it's not a space problem.

IMAP messages are stored on the server and not your computer. I think your
problem lies there and not Entourage.

You can only store as much server-side mail as your mail host account
allows. You'll have to either delete or download some mail if you start
running out of space.

Is it possible to set up as a POP account?

Which means it is purely coincidental that Entourage crashes at a 12 MB
database?

My dotMac account gets cleared out every day so it is way under allocation.
But still the messages are stored in the database while they are downloaded,
right? If not, where are they stored?
Now that you mention it, I had no problem with Entourage until I got the
IMAP account a few months ago!

That would sort of defeat the purpose . . .

One other thing. Go to your Accounts and click on the Options tab. Check the
Allow online access. You'll see a new icon in the folder window. Now click
on that. It will show you all the mail left on the .mac server.

There isn't any "Online Access", but there is something called "Live Sync"
which I selected for experimentation.

I don't use IMAP, but this option works under POP giving you a poor mans
IMAP account. Basically, I wanted you to check to see if your messages are
being deleted or stored and filling up your account allowance.

Well, I'm up to 15 MB and still no prob. Thanks Diane!
Using either a new Identity or new User to test for problems sure helps
eliminate quickly the source of a problem. Glad to hear it's working for you
now. Keep us informed.

If you need to transfer data from the old identity we can help with that.
