rebuild Ent X Database gets hung up

I was beginning to experience some issues with Entourage X (v10.1.4)
and decided to rebuild the database. However, during the Typical
Rebuild process, it reaches message #600 during the "Compacting the
Database" stage and then hangs. Likewise, when I try the Advanced
Rebuild, it reaches message #1,400 and then hangs as well. The blue
bar hums away as if it's doing something but really, I know it's
mocking me. Clicking "Cancel" does not stop the rebuild process. The
only way to shut it down is to Force Quit.

Now, when I try to launch Entourage, it informs me that the database
is corrupt and that I should attempt to rebuild. This particular piece
of information and advice is not terribly helpful right now. I am
going to reinstall MS Office, just in case that helps, and, if
necessary, I can restore from a backed up database from last
Wednesday. However, I'd prefer not to lose everything if I can avoid
it.

Shortly after I posted this, I spotted Barry Wainright's posting from
1/27/04. First, there was the "Duh" moment when I realized that for some
reason I had not used the 10.1.5 updater. After I did that and followed his
directions, I was able to open Entourage but, sadly, all of the contents
from the database were gone so I had to restore from last Wednesday
evening's version. Grrrr.

Just a cautionary tale, folks - backup, backup, backup.
