rebuilding database?

Mac OS 9.1, Office 2001 (Entourage 2001).
Seems like it takes a while for it to open (10 seconds? I can time it
but haven't)
Would there be any value in rebuilding the database (Option key held on
opening, I think) to speed up the opening?
Messages file is 247MB; database file is 20MB.

OK, it took 22 seconds from launch before my inbox appeared.
