Rebuilt database _ lost archived email

I needed to re-build my Entourage database. Afterwards, I found all
saved messages sorted into specific subfolders had vanished. Yet all
the messages that were in the main "inbox" remain present. So a
couple of years worth of correspondence kept in various "subfolders"
appear to be gone. Yet the subfolders themselves are still present.

Does anyone know what has happened or if the messages are
irretrievably lost? (aaack!)

How can I back up (and restore, if neccesary) old correspondence and
prevent this from happening again? Can I restore the missing messages
via the "Old Database" found in the Users Folder? I can't find a way to
do this.

I obviously did something very stupid. As the human fly in the movie
said, "Help me. Help me."

Thanks in advance,

thokitts

I'm having the same problem, except i didn't rebuild. all my
subfolders disappeared, but i can tell the messages are all still
there in my message db -- 289mb. How do I get them back?

I had some success tonight rebuilding the 8,900 message database using
the Advanced Find feature. Make sure you have the whole message file
intact. This was on a Mac G4, os 9.2.2 running Office 2001 Entourage.
I found the biggest message file in the backups and the biggest
database file and recovered some folders right off, but a strange
collection of nested and recent folders (most without email content).
I was able to search the messages by folder (all messages, search for
folder) and reconstruct several by finding the associated messages,
moving them from the find window to new folders on the desktop and
then back into new folders in a new Main User account. That recoverd
about 15 percent of the messages.

I was able to search more messages using advanced find (all messages,
pick your criteria) and reconstructed my folders using the desktop
transfer process. it will take a week or so, but they are all there.
Wierd, but it worked. I hope you can recover your messages.
