Receive emails while Outlook is closed

Hi

Is there some software/addin which can check for email while Outlook is
closed? Something that sits in the taskbar perhaps, which opens Outlook once
something comes in.

Thanks.

I, for one, don't know of anything. Why not just have Outlook running?

Don't know if this applies to you, but if you have a PDA configured to synch
with outlook and leave it connected, but close Outlook, you will continue to
receive notifications of new email (at least with Outlook 2003).

That's because Outlook continues to run as long as the PDA is cradled. If
you were to open Task Manager and examine the existing processes, you'd see
OUTLOOK.EXE as one of them.

Exactly. Which brings up your earlier question - why not just leave Outlook
open? If you don't like it in your taskbar, then you can configure it to
minimize to the notification area (or system tray). Search help with the
word "Minimize."

I'm completely amazed at this thread - I have actually been asked the
exact same question as the OP poses several times in the past. And,
as many times as I've been asked, I still haven't heard a real answer
to my reply:

"If it's important enough to be notified that you have new mail, why
do you insist that Outlook be closed at all, aren't you going to open
it anyway? And isn't new mail notification already a function of
Outlook?"

I'm bookmarking this one, maybe I'll get my answers - oddly enough,
the people that have asked me in the past if it's possible could never
answer my return questions...

The answer is that no, there doesn't appear to be any such add-in or someone
would have mentioned it by now.

It's the other question I want the answer to - under what
circumstances would you even need such an add-in?

Well, my answer is, "I can't think of any."

I had this same requirement a couple of years ago and back then I used ICQ.
There was an option with ICQ that you could set to check for emails ready to
be received. It would allow you to see the header information. You could
even have it delete the emails if you did not want to read them. I don't use
it now, mainly because most of my emails are sent to webmail accounts. Check
it out. It may still work and may be just what you need.

Get an account with Yahoo (or some other web-based email service). Set it
to use your pop3 account. Be sure to also set it to NOT remove messages
from the server.

You can check email all you want and it will stay in the server. When you
open Outlook it will be able to retrieve your messages again.

You can also do this with Outlook Express.
