Receive Multiple Copies of Same Message

Recently Entourage began copying messages three or four times upon
receipt. Even more unfortunate, it won't delete them. Any ideas?

Lindy,

You don't state what version of Entourage or your mail protocol (POP or
IMAP), but I'm willing to bet that you are using IMAP with Entourage
2004.

Known problem (at least to me). Don't know if anyone from Microsoft
gives a damn to comment on the bug and if they've done anything to fix
it, since it has been around for at least 2 years in my experience.

A quick summary: IMAP (not confined to any one "brand" of server) Mail
when run in conjunction with calendars & contacts will replicate
messages; a mailbox repair "fixes" the problem typically for less than a
day before new messages are replicated. Versions of Entourage: any 11.x
release appears to be affected. 10.x of Entourage does not exhibit the
problem.

In my testing, if you run IMAP without any contacts or calendar entries
the bug does not manifest itself. Once you add those in, within 24
hours (48 at the outside), incoming messages appear multiple times in
the inbox.

Hopefully someone is listening here and can comment on whether or not
this has been fixed in 2008 (as it hasn't been in any recent version of
2004).

NB: I see this occurring with people who have >2-3k messages in their
inbox. Once the database is "infected" reducing inbox size does not
appear to cure the problem, even with a database rebuild.

This could be a sign of early database corruption, or it could be your
server having hiccups.

Before you try rebuilding, you might test in a new Identity. Create a new
Identity in Entourage and enter the problem account. Make sure you set to
leave mail on server so the mail will still be available for your Main
Identity to download. Test receiving. Are you still receiving duplicates? If
yes, then it¹s most likely your ISP. If not, then you should rebuild your
database.

Before rebuilding duplicate your Identity. Even though the rebuild
duplicates it, if the process goes wrong, you could loose your database.
This rarely happens but it¹s always best to be safe by duplicating first.
