recieving duplicate email messages

Dan

Hi, I'm recieving duplicate email messages in entourage, any ideas.
Thanks

I recently upgraded to Entourage 2004 from Entourage X and have the
same problem.

The problem is that on the .Mac server, not on my Mac, I had checked
the box "Leave messages on server." When I unchecked this box the
double emails stopped. So, go to .Mac , login, click on "Mail", and
click on "Preferences" and uncheck "Leave messages on server." Ok?

This can't be the soulution. I have the same problem since Entourage 2004
with an other provider. In my view there is a bug in the online access
function. Sometimes also vanishes emails, to bring them back I have to flush
the chache of the account...

Oops... At first, all worked fine. But now the problem continues...
But, for mac.com email address only. Hmmm. Dan

Ok... I think I've figured it out. In Entourage under Tools, Accounts,
edit an Account. For all Accounts, under "Receiving mail," the same
"Account ID" and "POP server" may only appear together once with
Entourage 2004. E.g., Account ID: danarnold and POP server:
mail.mac.com may only appear together once. This was not true under
Entourage X. So, I eliminated from "Receiving mail" the Account ID and
POP server entries of the second account where email was just being
forwarded to me. I can still send email using that account. And, as the
email to me is being forwarded to my [email protected] account, I
checked and I still receive my forwarded email for that email address
ok. Hope that is helpful. Dan

Ok... I think I've figured it out.

Dan - you'll get a hero medal for this!

Until it is fixed I'm stuck with 6 copies of every incoming mail. That is
due to the way my hosting service luxsci.com handles email. They charge
extra/month for every "user", meaning email address. Other than that I love
their service, 5* support and secure email.

So we just use aliases --> therefore we have six Tools/Accounts entries with
identical Account ID/Pop Server.

This duplicate message bug existed in Office v.X as well. It has followed us
thru two hosting services and the 2004 upgrade.

PS- How do we confirm with Microsoft this is the problem?

Thanks heaps,
Steve

There's no bug, and there's no need to confirm anything with Microsoft. It
would BE a bug to allow more than one account with the same username and POP
server.

I fail to understand why you think you need that. You just need one POP
account in Entourage with your "real" username - the one that your ISP
forwards all the others to. Then make new SMTP-only accounts for the other
so-called "aliases": Put whatever you want as the "Email address" (i.e. the
alias [email protected]) but leave the POP server address empty. Fill in
the SMTP (sending) server the same way you have the real account. When you
click OK, you'll get a warning about no POP server but ignore it.

Now you'll only get the messages downloading once. (Is there any reason why
you can't set the POP account to remove messages form the server? Do you
need to access form another computer perhaps? It shouldn't really matter,
though.) When clicking Reply, it will always default to replying from your
real POP account, so you'll need to switch the account to the appropriate
SMTP-only "alias" account if you want it to appear that you're replying from
the same alias that the sender wrote to. (I once had a script that could do
this automatically, but not for 6 such accounts.)

Or is there something I'm misunderstanding?

Please "Reply To Newsgroup" to reply to this message. Emails will be
ignored.

PLEASE always state which version of Microsoft Office you are using -
**2004**, X or 2001. It's often impossible to answer your questions
otherwise.

Disable the >> Include this account in my "Send and Receive All"
schedule << check box in Account Settings (Tools -> Accounts -> Edit
Account) for all but the default account.

I was allowed to set up an extra account, one more with the same
username and POP server. When I did so, and forgot to disable the check
box, I got duplicate incoming mails - and a warning dialog (which I
didn't pay very much attention to) - that is when I hit Command + K to
get mail from the POP server.

This is in Entourage 2004. So is there a bug after all?

Thats the way I've done that in Entourage 2001, except I put the word
"false" in both the Account ID and POP server fields.

I use the extra account to send e-mail messages where I ask for a Return
Receipt.

That's your problem. If you only want to receive messages once but be able
to send from all of the aliases, take out the "Receiving Mail" information
and deselect the option to "Include this account in my Send & Receive All
schedule" from every one of the six accounts except one.

Why is it that none of these problems occurs in Apple Mail.
One mail only comes in one time. Simple as that.
It seems as if Microsoft is putting the effort on the side of the user
instead of finding a solution itself...
I have exactly one account (with multiple aliases) and indeed mails come in
several times. Only solution so far is deleting them from the server.
