Recover Old Identity!

just recently my entourage crashed, and i had extremely important emails in
the account, i wasn't able to get into entourage , but after reading a few
discussion boards, if i saved the database file which is located in Microsoft
user data, i could just copy the file over into the directory and it would
restore all my emails.

Since then i have tried to "import" through the Import/export feature in
entourage (after re-installing), and i am unable to click on the file. i
think this is because i originally didn't export all the emails using the
Export feature in entourage, rather just copies the files in the 'Microsoft
User data' area.

The Database file i have is 6.6gig, and i know that this file contains all
my emails, i just cant import them into my new (re-installed copy) of
entourage??

can some one help me?

You cannot "import" from a database created in the same version of
Entourage. You must "Switch Identity" under the Entourage menu. That means
you must have a complete Identity folder containing that database; the
Identity folder must be inside Office 200x Identities (where x represents 4
or 8, depending on which version you're running).

Hope this helps.

oh i did that and it comes up with a error message saying "this identity
cannot be opened with this version of Entourage. Now i cannot open the
application at all, with out the error message coming up.

The "this identity cannot be opened" error occurs when your database was
created by a version of Entourage newer than the one you are running. Did
you re-install Entourage recently? If so, you may need to apply SP1 or SP2
to bring it up to the current version; then, the database should open.

If your version of Entourage hasn't changed since the crash, I don't have an
explanation for the error.

Did you reinstall Office? If so, open it in a new identity and then use
Check for Updates on the Help menu to bring it up to the latest version. It
should then open the old identity.

If you have not reinstalled Office then I, like Allen, am stuck.

If you do decide to do a rebuild, make a duplicate in the Finder first as
additional backup. A rebuild does make a duplicate, but sometimes in the
process the original and backup get merged resulting in total disaster.
It's rare but it happens.

You can bring over your rules, sig, and Mailing List Manager files from the
other Identity. The folder destinations will have to be reset, but it's
quicker than starting from scratch.

How to manually move your data. (when import fails and/or you need to move
to a new Identity same version or revert to an older version)
