As long as you haven¹t emptied the trash, they should still be in your
deleted items folder.

Unfortunately, I did empty the trash.
As long as you haven¹t emptied the trash, they should still be in your deleted
items folder.

Unfortunately, I did empty the trash.
In that case, about all you can do is to duplicate the database and open the
copy in a text editor like BBEdit and search the 4gb of text & garbage for
your missing messages. You should be able to recover most of the text this
way, even if you can¹t rebuild actual messages. It will, obviously, help if
you can search for some reasonably unique text in the missing messages.
