Recovering unicode subjects?

We had some Japanese messaged moved from an older (pre 2003) pst to a
Outlook 2003 pst prior to the Japanese language pack being installed. The
subjects in the new pst are all now garbage characters. Since this was done
prior to Japanese being installed correctly I'm thinking it converted them
and am wondering if I can recover the Japanese subjects?
