recurring corrupt Micorsoft (Entourage) database

I have a client that continually has her database getting corrupt. It
has, so far, always been repairable but it doesn't seem I should have
to do it once a month or so. I'm afraid one of theses times it's not
going to be able to be repaired.

She has a G5 running OS 10.4.4 and Office 2004.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to why the file keeps going bad?

Once I updated to version 11.2.3, I was always getting notices that my
database was corrupt almost every time I would fire up Entourage. I
would verify and all would be well. I have since turned off the
notifications and check it every so often. That's when Entourage is
working. The 11.2.3 update has totally trashed Entourage. It is now the
worst application I have ever run, when it use to be my most reliable.

If your client hasn't updated, do not look to the 11.2.3 update as a
solution. Matter of fact, stay far away from it. If she is still in the
previous version the corruption could be from severe disk
fragmentation, as I encountered in earlier versions. Also beware of
10.4.6, 10.4.4 is a safe place to be.

I just bought the new Mac Book Pro so I am trying to backup or copy all of
my files to an external HD, so's to restore them onto the new machine.

I am running Entourage 11.2.3
And Tiger 10.4.6

I get the database corruption message when I try to back up Entourage.
I can't find the Database Repair Tool as mentioned in the error message.

But is this not going to work as per below?

Any suggestions on how I can get the Mail files across?

I've done and Export on my Contacts so I can import them, but I can't see
where the actual files reside...

Help much appreciated.

Hi Janice,

What exactly are you doing when you are trying to backup Entourage? At what
stage does the error message show up? You can access the Database Repair
Utility by quitting Entourage and by holding down the Option (Alt) key when
relaunching the application. Check your database integrity first, then
rebuild if necessary.

As for the backup itself: I assume you know that Entourage stores all its
items in a database, which you can find in ~/Documents/Microsoft User
Data/Office 2004 Identities/<your identity name>. If your database is okay,
you can simply copy the MUD folder from your old computer to your MacBook
Pro (just make sure that no Office programs are running on your laptop
during the transfer, especially not Entourage!), and when you launch
Entourage on your MacBook Pro, it should automatically pick up the identity
found in that folder. You can also export your mailboxes individually by
dragging them from the folder list pane to the desktop, and import them the
other way round, once they've been transferred to your laptop.

I should warn you that your MacBook Pro comes with a Test Drive version of
Office 2004. Make sure you remove that (using the Remove Office Tool, inside
the Microsoft Office 2004 folder) before installing your copy of Office, or
you'll most likely encounter strange problems later on. Also, make sure that
once you've installed Office, it is up-to-date; you'll need to update it to
SP2 or later before it will be able to read your database.

If you have any more questions, just post back.

Uhh, sorry, I was trying to ...Export....not backup, everything from
Entourage using the Export feature built in when I got the Database
corruption error.

I did not know that MS User Date, Identities was the storage area.
There are two, one is Office 2004 and the other is Office X.
I have verified that the database integrity is okay.

Have removed the Office Test Drive, thanks for that.

I will work on the rest of the pointers you have supplied and post back if I
run into any further problems.

Thanks for your help.

The export routine obviously touches every entry in the database, so will
easily find any corruption.

If the rebuild has not fixed the problem, then try exporting just one type
of data at a time and see if you can find where the corruption lies.

Dear Folks,
When trying to fix an almost constant crashing difficulty with Entourage X
10.1.0 I ran the script to quit daemons as recommended in an online guide.
It did not fix the problem, now the program will not open at all. The error
message I get is:

"Microsoft Entourage cannot load the Microsoft Office shared libraries.

The files may have been moved from their original locations.
Try the following:

- Move Entourage back to the Microsoft Office folder )or to where it was
originally installed).
- Reinstall Entourage to make sure that all files are installed correctly."

I do not like Entourage from Office 2004 (It feels patronizing - I hate that
you must ask permission for the pictures in a received message to be
downloaded if the sender is not in your address book, for example), and I
don¹t like Mail from Apple, or Eudora, or any of the others.

I LOVE Entourage X version 10.1.0, which is the one I ruined by getting rid
of the Daemons. I have searched for hours trying to find a way to buy
Entourage X 10.1.0 again since I don¹t have the discs anymore. Do you know
either where I can find it to buy, or how to fix Entourage X version 10.1.0
that¹s still on my Mac?

Thank you so much for your attention.
Reno
