Red cross on images, works in office 2000, not 2003

I have the dreaded red crosses instead of JPEG images on powerpoint
presentations. However they show up fine on office 2000 on windows
2000.

I have read a lot of posts about this however I couldn't find this
exact issue so I was hoping there is a known fix.
