Then replace the URL with that of the prior page.

The problem is that the visitor could enter this page from several different
means.
1. From an email link
2. From several other pages on the site.

I need something to return them to their prior page.
Any suggestions?

I now have a page that refreshes its contents after 5 seconds
and goes to a particular page, the line I used is:

<head>
<meta http-equiv="refresh"
content="5;URL=http://www.fairfieldseniorsgroup.com/Members.htm">

I would like it still to refresh after 5 seconds, but, return
to the prior page.

on this page you could use history.back.

does it have to be automatic or could it just be a link that would take them
back to wherever they were prior to arriving there?

Not sure what you mean by automatic or link to take them back.
However, I believe I mean automatic.

If I just inserted: history.back after the ; and then deleted the URL,
would that do it?

it wouldn't do anything. I was going to rustle up the little snippet of
code for you based on what you want, but:

how can you automatically push them back to where they came in from if you
don't know how long they want to stay on that page?

don't worry, the code for what you want is readily available, but I just
need to know better what you're trying to accomplish, and the "why" of what
you're trying to do would be helpful to me.

I have a weekly events calendar that is updated each week. In this weekly
(planner/calendar), members birthdays are listed, as part of that weeks
events. I want to link the member having a birthday to his or her "picture
page" through an animated "happy birthday " gif. The visitor or member
viewing the calendar can click on the flashing "birthday" gif and is then
taken to the members "picture page", just long enough to refresh their
memories on just what member is having a birthday. I also have on the web
site a members listing page which list each of our members, here their
"picture page" is linked by clicking on the members name.

So someone has two different means to get to the members "picture page". In
both cases they only need to stay long enough to view the picture.

To answer your question: "They only need to stay long enough to refresh
their memories.
I hope the above explains what I'm trying to accomplish.

You might look at the page by going to:
http://www.fairfieldseniorsgroup.com/weeklyCalendar.htm

Right now the link through the animated "birthday" gif, takes them to the
members picture only, not the members "picture htm page".
