Refreshing the worksheet

Hello all. First off please talk to me like I'm two. I'm not knowledgeable
in the least about this. It is, in fact, a miracle that I've even been able
to get this far. ;-)

I have created several worksheets that perform various calculations here and
there. However, when I enter certain numbers on one worksheet, the products
on another worksheet don't just pop up there automatically. Instead, I have
to individually click in every single cell to show the product, rendering
the entire worksheet useless for it's purpose.

Is there any setting somewhere that I need to change in order for it to show
up immediately, without intervention?

TIA,

Cindy

Hi Cindy

If I understand you correct ?
Tools>options>Calculation
Change it to automatic

When you say "show the product" - do you mean show the result of
multiplication?

First, try updating some of the numbers, then go to where you want the
products to show up, and press F9... If this works, you have automatic
calculation unchecked, go to tools>options>calculation and make sure
calculation is set to automatic.

But if this were the case, you'd have to do more than "click in every single
cell" to get it to calculate (you'd have to click in the formula bar for the
cell, then re-enter the formula.. or press F9 to recalculate all), so maybe
you already have automatic calculation on.

Hi Ron,

Yes, I found that option too, but unfortunately it was already checked. I
can't figure out what I need to do. :(
If it matters, I have Excel 97 SR1

Do you mean that you can't see the cell formula ?
And if you click in the cell you can see it in the formulabar

No. That's a normal thing, isn't it?

As Dave put it, I mean the result of the multiplication, not the formula
itself. The result is simply not there, until I click in the cell. Once I
do, it's like magic and it just suddenly appears. F9 does not help the
problem.

Thanks again,

Cindy

Not sure whether this would help,
maybe try a "toggle" of the equal sign "=" ..

Press F5 > Special > Check "Formulas" > OK
(this selects all the formula cells)

Click Edit > Replace
Find what: =
Replace with: zzzz
Click "Replace All"

Now with all the ex-formula cells still selected ..
(do not click anywhere <g>)

Click Edit > Replace
Find: zzzz
Replace with: =
Click Replace all

Hi Gord,
What happens if you hit CRTL + ALT + F9?
It didn't seem to do anything.
Do you get an updating of values.
Nope. I still had to go clicking around.

After much frustration I followed computer rule number one: Reboot. All
seemed to work well then all of a sudden, it began doing it again. Aha. This
meant Excel shouldn't be doing this, which was good for me because I didn't
like what it was doing to begin with.

I then had trouble opening it altogether. I still don't know what the
problem was. I had to reboot three times before the &$%&# started working
again. I have no idea what was causing the problem, but since the last shut
down (and wait 15 minutes) all is working.
I believe you must download and install Service Pack 2 for Office 97 to clear
up the calculation problems. SR-1 is not enough.
I will certainly go find it and try it out. Thank you so much for your help
Gord (as well as all the others).
