reinstalling entourage address book data

G

Greg

I recently used a utility program to ID and remove duplicate files and
apps. Sorry I did. In the process I lost my address book data.
Oddly, all mail and projects data is intact. The address book has few
entries but not all. I use Super Duper to back up so could pull the
data off of the dupe. I know that most entourage data is in the user
file but how do I know which data is the right data? The data that's
in the trash and was removed by the utility program or the data that
is on the dupe? Many thanks.

I'm always very leery of applications that do blanket changes like this.
Always use with caution and with a good backup as you did.

I'm not sure what happened, I can explain that Entourage stores your data in
the Microsoft User Data folder. (Rules, mailing lists, signatures, messages,
address book, schedules, contacts, tasks, notes, calendar are located in a
database inside your Main Identity)

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/database/index.html#db1>

Don't ever delete this folder or contents. The only exception is when you do
a rebuild of your database. Entourage creates a backup of your data in case
something goes wrong with the rebuild so you can revert to your original
data. When you are satisfied with the rebuild you can delete these files.

One exception to Entourage data location is projects. The Project Watch
Folder is stored in this location: /Users/username/Documents/Office Projects
folder. It sounds like this folder wasn't touched by the remove duplicates.

Old files are named:

Entourage 2004: Main [Backed up date and time will be shown] e.g. Main
[Backed up 1-21-2007 13.35]

Entourage X: "Old Database Cache" and "Old Database"

Entourage 2001: "Old Database Cache", "Old Database", and "Old Messages." In
addition, Database (Rebuild) Cache is retained.

Please help me.....
There was a problem with a user name on my mac, so i decided to cut and
paste all my data over to a new user.
The funny thing was, the data from all my other mac applications worked,
but the only windows app i use often, Entourage didn't take well to be cut
and pasted over to another user.
Now every time i open entourage, a box pops up that says, "Entourage cannot
access your data. To attempt to fix the problem, rebuild your database."
I click OK, and another window comes up with the options:
"Verify Database intergrity"
"Compact Database"
"Rebuild Database"
and "Set Database Preferences"

Clicking on any of the first three results in error -5000, and clicking the
last one does nothing....
i thought now it would work if i migrated the database file back to the old
user, but the same problem occured then.
Could someone please help me fix this?
Thank you,

From the Error Page:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/error/page.html#error-5000>

Error -5000

Messages with an attachment creates Error -5000

Attachments are stored in the Entourage Temp folder inside the Microsoft
User Data folder. This is where Entourage is trying to save the file before
it opens. Check the permissions on this folder.

Owner Access: Read Write
Group Access: Read only
Others: Read only

You can delete the Entourage Temp folder, and Entourage will create a new
one when launched.

Without knowing more about the problems you are having, I can't say for
sure, but it sounds like your new User isn't working as expected. I would
wipe my hard drive and install everything new. Just backup your User's
folder that contains your data.

This might be the quickest solution and it will certainly give you a clean
system to work with rather than working on something that has been
compromised.

Let me know if you need help with this.
