Hello, All!

This is asked purely for information to save myself the
frustration of looking for non appearing posts. Are there some
topics which are automatically rejected in this newsgroup such
as paswords? (mis-spelling intentional).

No, but if you said naughty things it might have been blocked. Are you
saying naughty things?

(And I could only fantasize about a day when posts with misspelled words or
poor grammar were blocked. Unfortunately, some of mine would be blocked as
well. I spell beautifully but my keyboarding skills aren't the greatest.)

I see you're using OE. Are you connecting via the MS newsservers, or are you
using your ISP's newsservers?

You might try resetting the newsgroup in OE. You might also try accessing
via the MS newsservers.

Clicking news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.office.misc should set
it up in OE if it's not already.

Thanks very much, I tried both my ISP server,
newsgroups.comcast.net, and msnews.microsoft.com and I'm certain
some of my posts never appeared on either. It might have been a
random glitch but I didn't get any replies answering my question
about removing protection. As I said, the solution is to copy
the contents of the workbook to a new one but that involves
formatting and I wonder why I can't simply remove a protection
from a document?

I was fairly sure I tried that but I just did it again. I took
a protected file, did a "Save as" with a different name and a
blank pasword but when I tried to open it, I still needed the
original pasword.

With best regards, James Silverton. E-mail:

Open the passworded file. File, Save As, Tools, General Options,
Backspace over the Password, Ok, Save (don't change the filename), Close
file. The next time you open it it will NOT ask for a password.

Thanks Bob!

I did exactly what you said and, when I opened the file again, I
got the usual

'name' is protected
Password:

I tried giving ENTER at the password prompt but that did not
work.

You might want to ask in one of the Excel groups to see if anyone there has
seen anything like this, because Bob's instructions work here for me. This
is exactly how I've always removed passwords from a PowerPoint file, and I
just now tried it also with an Excel file just to make sure.

If it's easier for you, you can also highlight and delete the password in
Tools/Options on the Security tab. Then okay your way out of there and just
hit the Save icon (or File/Save or Ctrl+S). That way you don't have to even
go into the Save As dialog box to get to the password....

I did *not* change the file name since I was following your

work either.

It is quite a puzzle but a clue may have just emerged. Your
method and mine seem to work if I create a protected file using
Office Professional but not on the files I was talking about. My
version of Office is up to date as far as I know. I have just
realized that the files that gave me trouble were originally
created with Office 98 (or something of that vintage) and were
opened and then saved in XP. The passwords were set after the
files had been used in XP for some time and I only set them
because I was sharing my computer with a visitor and the files
were personal financial records. Now I know that the problem
occurs I will not continue to damn Microsoft and I am glad that
there are only a few files liable to the problem.

I don't think the source of the problem is worthwhile pursuing
further but I hate to be the one to find out about bugs,
especially ones that no one but me seems to see :)

Ah! Good sluthing. Is XP still saving the problem spreadsheet as a Excel
5. 95 or 97 type file, or is it converted to an "XP" version?

To the best of my knowledge, it is an XP file with no obvious
differences from currently created files. How do you tell
anyway? It is listed as a "Microsoft Excel Worksheet" as are
files created recently. However, if I place the cursor over
worksheets *known* to be created by Excel 98 and on a separate
partition, I get the same result.

I'm not sure about the Excel 98 as that was the Mac version of Office.
Perhaps doing File, Save As, and then adjust the type to "2002"? I don't
have XP/2002 but 2003 version allows this.

Bob:

The original files were Excel97 not 98 but I'm having trouble
making a new file from scratch with same behavior as I
described. I can take one of the troubling files and replace the
contents and still have the password problem. In fact, if you
give me a suitable address, I can mail a one line password
protected file as an attachment but I am puzzled.

For the record, my munged e-mail address can be restored in a
fairly obvious fashion: "I really am jim.silverton."

Perhaps, it is not worth continuing :)
