Relative Link once uploaded to the Web

Hi,

I have created a powerpoint link to a word document. My folder
structure is the following.

C:\TestLinks\PowerPoint\PowerpointFile.ppt

I need to link to

C:\TestLinks\Word\WordFile.doc

After linking, I tested the powerpointfile does indeed links to the
word document.

However, I need to upload this Powerpoint document to the web. Thus, I
uploaded the entire TestLinks folder up onto the web server. I can now
access the ppt file through IE from this URL

http://localhost/Mambo/dmdocuments/TestLinks/Powerpoint/PowerpointFile.ppt

The problem is that the link to the Word document now no longer works
even though the relative link has been set. Any workaround to this
matter? I wouldn't want to relink all my links and point it to the full
web URL. Appreciate any help provided.

Put all the documents into the same folder as your PowerPoint presentation
before you make your links, then upload all the files to your webspace.

The problem is that links from a PowerPoint file are only relative if
they point to something in the same folder. I believe that a subfolder
will work as well, but a sister folder won't work. Your best choice is
might be to put everything in C:\TestLinks with the separate folders for
PowerPoint and Word.

Your Right, But probably can't hurt to try

| Will even that work?
|
| I'm thinking:
|
| User clicks on link to PPT file on web
| Web server feeds user the PPT, user's browser stores it in the local TEMP
| PPT gets opened from the TEMP
| User clicks link in the PPT to a doc file; link is pathless (relative) so
PPT
| looks for it in the same folder as the PPT. Where it isn't. Busted.

When the ppt is opened, the file is actually downloaded to the client's
Temporary Drive. Clicking on the links pop up the following error msg.

Cannot find 'C:\Documents and Settings\MyMachine\Local
Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\CHUJWX6Z\Word\Design
Evolution.doc'. Make sure the path or Internet address is correct.

Are we really stuck in this case? Any other workaround or suggestions?

I tried this and it seems to be working for now.

Copied the file into the Web Server. Open up the file using PowerPoint.
Then go to File > Properties. Under Hyperlink base, put in the
following, http://localhost/mambo/dmdocuments/Test links/

With this setting, the links now work when launched with IE. All the
links remain relative. This would mean that powerpoint work can resume
as normal in a local machine. Once all files are ready and linked
relatively, copy the entire folder to the web server. Open each ppt
file and change the Hyperlink base.

Any concerns or issues with this, please raise. :)

At the time when I thought I found the solution, I was on Office 2000.
Using Hyperlink base seems to fix the problem with linking to another
document. However, this method would cause a problem when linking
internally to another slide. An error would pop up!

I tested this entire mess on a machine with Windows XP Home & Office
2003. The Hyperlink base causes the same error when linking internally.
Thus I removed the hyperlink base entirely. Tested the links again, and
it works without a problem even though the powerpoint is downloaded to
the client's temp directory. Even works with linking to other file
types.

I will try the following and post the findings
1. Upgrade Office 2000 with all latest service pack. Unable to perform
this on office network as policy blocks. Thus need to try from some
other machine.
2. Install Powerpoint 2003 Viewer.

If anyone one has a definitely solution on how to fix this problem on
Office 2000 or Office XP, please do provide. Thanks.
