Relaying is Prohibited -- SMTP Issues

I am trying to move from OS 9.2.2 and Outlook (2001) to OS X (10.3.2)
and Entourage (10.1.5) but I am running into issues using our Exchange
server. I am confused as to why I suddenly need an SMTP address to
use Exchange. I have entered our SMTP address (which is actually
never used in our office) and I can send mail to anyone on our domain,
but I get an error any time I try to send to an outside address. I
have tried with authentication on and get the same error. I have
tried using the exchange server name, the IP address of the server,
the server name plus domain, but all to no avail. I know that other
exchange clients must have this working. So what is the fix??

The fix is to have your Exchange administrator configure the server to
either turn off the relaying restriction, or enable SMTP authentication.
Clients such as Windows Outlooks use MAPI to send mail, which is why they
don't have the same problem.

You could also configure your Mac to be an SMTP server. There have been
previous posts on this newsgroup about doing that.
