Relocating the Microsoft User Data Folder

Don Trammell

I would like to know if it is possible to relocate the Microsoft User
Data Folder from its default location to another location? I currently
have have the MUD on one partition while the actual Entourage
application is on another partition. Is it possible to relocate the MUD
to the same partition as the Entourage application as this would result
in a space savings?

Thanks in advance.

No, but you can relocate the identity to the other partition, which
results in almost the same space savings. Simply move the identity
folder and then put an alias to it in its old place. m.

I suspect you could, ut you'd need to create an alias or a symlink at
the proper location to "help" Office locating it.

Try the alias. If it doesn't work and you don;t know how to create
symlink, post back and I'll do my best to give you detailed
instructions,

Alias works fine. Move the MUD folder wherever you want. (If it's on a
different partition or disk, it will do a copy, not a move, so you'll have
to trash the original.) Then make an alias to the moved folder in the
original location by option-command-dragging the moved MUD folder to the
original location in ~/Documents.

Hello Paul,

Thanks for the info. Please excuse my ignorance. I am a bit new to
Apple/Mac so some things are not so obvious. Can you explain, step by
step if you do not mind, how to move the MUD and then create the link
to it. I have two partitions set up on my Mac. One is for the OS while
the other is for Apps and Data. I would like to more the MUD to the
Apps partition.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Don

First, open Entourage, and go to Entourage > Turn off Office Notifications.
Quit Entourage.

Now, locate the Microsoft User Data folder on the OS partition (it should be
located in OS Partition/Users/<Your User>/Documents/). Open a new Finder
window with the Apps & Data partition open, and drag the Microsoft User Data
folder to the Apps & Data partition. When that is complete, move the
Microsoft User Data folder from the OS partition to the Trash. Now, while
holding down the Command (•) and Option keys, drag the Microsoft User Data
folder from the Apps & Data partition back to its original location on the
OS partition to create an alias.

Now, launch Entourage. If your data does not show up, go to Entourage >
Switch Identity, and re-select your identity.
