Remarkably long time to rebuild database

Using Leopard and Entourage 2008, i opened Microsoft Office today and was told i needed to rebuild the database. After 2 hours, the time indicator shows i am only halfway through step 1/5. Does this seem normal to you? I have a 100GB hard drive Mac Book Pro with 9.5GB free space and a database of size 7.2GB.

Would i be better off stopping the process and using Time Machine to go back to yesterday when the file was evidently not corrupted?

It's not at all surprising that with less than 10% free disk space that
this is happening.

In general with a unix-based system like MacOS, it's recommend that you
maintain at least 20% free.

To rebuild a database, I'd recommend at least 2 times the size of the DB
free.

You could try waiting if progress keeps going. But if you can off-load
some of your disk you'll get better performance.

You may even get a boost if you restart your machine which will
automatically delete any temp files.
