Hi,

I think I know the answer to this but was just looking for tips. I'm
getting a macbook soon and am going to get Office 2004 and use
entourage as my email client.

I have a pop3 account for the company I run, and currently have my PC
setup to pick up and send via this account. All of the details for pop3
and outbound/ inbound emails etc are all fine when I am in my office
using my ISP.

The question I have is, when I get my macbook I want to take it out of
my office. If I use a wireless hotspot in a coffee shop (for example) -
can I still use entourage? I'm guessing I can pick up emails fine, but
that I won't be able to send them until I get back into the office and
my pop3.myISP.com is correct? (as the coffee shop will be a different
ISP?)

any tips would be great - thanks!

See if your email provider offers an authenticated SMTP server that you can
use from any location.

If they don't provide one, you can always use Postfix to set up your own
mac as your SMTP server. It's not perfect, but it does the job quite
well in most cases.

You should be able to send and receive.

If you can switch your POP connection to IMAP then you can leave your
mail on the server until you decide to delete it. Your PC and Mac will
stay synchronized even if you create/move/delete folders and mail.

How does this work with regards to Pop3?

Thanks all ofr your replies - I know I can manually change the settings
for each individual wi-fi connection within entourage, ~I was just
wondering if there was a way around this.

Many thanks all.

How does this work with regards to Pop3?

I suspect something is not clear so let me try to summarize:

POP3 is for receiving e-mail. It gets them from the server and deletes
them (usually).

IMAP is a different way to get your e-mails. The e-mails are stored on
the server and downloaded locally for reading. Nothing is actually
deleted from the server (as opposed to what happens with POP3). This is
interesting in many cases because it means that if you reconnect to your
account from another computer, you'll see all your e-mails the way you
left them on the server.
Very useful when checking accounts from multiple computers.

SMTP is for sending e-mails. You can either use your regular SMTP
(providing it supports authentication and lets you send from outside of
their domain), or the one from your local ISP, or make your own Mac into
your personal SMTP server. SMTP is use both for POP# and IMAP accounts.

From what I understand of what you need, I would guess that you'd need
touse your account in IMAP (if possible of course) and chaneg the SMTP
settings to be able to send from the other location where you'll use
your Mac.

Many thanks Corentin - I'll try and explain my issue clearer.

OK I have 1 inbox email account. Inside that account I get emails from
several different domains:

[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]

OK? All of those emails go into one single inbox. I know I can setup
entourage to download them all onto my macbook, and I can also setup
profiles so I can REPLY from my macbook from either of those accounts.
(I setup those accounts but tick 'do not include this account in send/
receive' (or similar). That's fine - I know how to do that.

The issues are these:

1) I have a partner who will be having his macbook set up the same as
mine. We both want copies of EVERY email from the server. (so that we
can check each others emails when we're away etc. There will be nothing
private from each other). What I was going to do was setup the accounts
but leave copies on the server so that we both get every email in the
inbox.
I know Sent Items will be unique to each machine? So if I send an email
to a client the email in the Sent Items will only be on my machine? If
so that's not a real problem - we can BCC each other in.
2) At the office we have a different ISP to what I have at home, and
also if I use a wifi hotspot in a coffee shop etc that will be
different. I know that to receive emails that's fine - I just need
internet access. But to send emails I know I'll have to go into the
account settings and change the pop3 address to suit each ISP. That's
fine - I know how to do it - I was just wondering if there was a way I
could get around it?

I really appreciate your help. I haven't got the macbooks yet - I'm
just trying to understand what I need to do for when I get them which
will be in the next couple of days. If you could let me know your
opinions of what you would do and if I need to ask my hosting or ISP
any particular questions let me know.

I'm also going to post another issue about sharing calendar entries -
but I thik that needs a different topic.

many thanks again.

I concur with William switch your POP connection to IMAP. See understanding
the differences between POP and IMAP.

I suggest looking at other options. Here are some that were recommended by

Many thanks for your help.

I think for the calendars a .mac account will be best - we're not
bothered about posting them on the web - just making sure that each
others are up to date with each other.

I will ask about IMAP. If my hosting service does not provide - am i
correct in thinking that pop3 with the 'leave a copy on the server'
ticked will be similar?

Thanks again.

Leaving mail on server will work, but it is not quite the same as IMAP. IMAP
is definitely the best way forward (and this isn't a mac thing - the same
applies no matter what client you are using to collect your mail).

I've checked and my email provider (web space host) accepts:

Supported Incoming Mail Protocols: POP3, POP3S (SSL/TLS), IMAP, IMAPS
(SSL/TLS)
Supported Outgoing Mail Protocols: SMTP, SMTPS (SSL/TLS)

Try enabling SSL in Entourage and see if that works while you're at
a hotspot.

Tools > Accounts > (Your Email Account) > Sending mail > Click here
for advanced sending options > SMTP service requires secure
connection (SSL)

You may also need to check the box that says "SMTP server requires
authentication."

I'm just guessing here, however, you really need to talk to your ISP
and ask them how to do it.
How would the secure smtp get around this?

Most public access Internet sources, such as wireless hotspots,
don't provide an SMTP server because it's so easily abused. So you
need to use your existing provider's, which is probably also secured
to prevent abuse. So you just need to know how to properly access
their servers.
would the secure smtp be from my ISP? Or from the web host package I use?

Either. Depends on what they offer.
