Repeated requests for network password

Hi!

Slumming it from the Excel Groups <vbg>

Over the last day, each time Outlook checks for new mail I'm getting a
request for the password.

I didn't change any settings although I did get auto updates of the
Beta SP 2 for Windows XP that might have done it for me.

Can't seem to get automatic checks and downloading again.

TIA

This seems a common problem that there is no real solution to. I have
it too. All the solutions posted about editing the registry or making
changes to outlook settings don't work. Mine has popped up twice
since I started typing just now.

Hi Robert!

Thanks for the reply. At least I know I'm not alone. I wonder if it's
an ISP thing?

I'll hang around for more replies but try other sources and report
back if I track down a solution to this veritable PITA.

It probably is an ISP thing - if you have your outlook set to check
automatically it opens up a pop session but doens't close it, then the
next check opens another session, but the mail server says "hey wait a
minute, you've already got a session open..." and requests
credentials. That's my guess. The thing is I only started getting it
since I upgraded to OL2003 - I was using OL2000 and never had the
problem. I have heard of it being a problem with XP (2002) as well.

There have been multiple posts about solving it from some of the MS
folks but their solutions are not correct and I have tried all forms
of them. The main suggestion is that the protected service entry in
the registry has become corrupted but resetting this does nothing. I
have deleted my account multiple times and reformed it, started new
PSTs, etc. The only thing I can think of there is a possibility of if
you imported your old pst into the new one if there is somethign that
is left causing the problem.

I know there is some sort of ISP side solution because if you google
'"enter network password" outlook 2003' you will see one entry from a
university that describes the issue and directs their students to
change the pop server name to a different one that they set up -
suggesting that they changed something and now the new pop server name
directs to a mail server (or the same one that's fixed) that will not
have the issue.

It's totally frustrating and it's the first time in my professional
career as a technical consultant that I am not able to solve a problem
satisfactorily - ironically my own problem. I am a big MS supporter
generally but Boo Hiss MS for this. Boo hiss the MS MVP's who keep
parroting the same solution that doesn't really work.

I wish I'd paid more attention to the answer when I had this problem, but
I'll post this for what it's worth in case it prompts something in someone's
mind. My ISP (BellSouth) said it was to do with having a proxy setting in
IE, which was put there by AdSubtract if I remember correctly, and that the
setting should be removed, which I did. They also talked about Norton
Anti-Virus and time-outs as being part of the issue. Sorry I can't remember
the detail of the solution - but it worked, haven't had the problem since.

Hi Robert!

Thanks a lot for the detail of that reply. Good to know that an MVP
(Outlook) guy is stuffed with the same problem. <vbg>

It looks like some darned fool at my ISP has been at the turps and
changed some of the code that was allowing an automatic check.

I've tried walking around with my pants down by disabling Norton
Antivirus; but no luck on that one. Even tried with a "Please Kick Me"
sign by disabling my firewalls; no luck.

John -

I do understand the solution you're talking about; unfortunately this
isn't the issue. In your instance adsubtract runs all the traffic
through a proxy. I'm just running straight in and have no such proxy
- I also don't run Norton. Very annoying. I may have to go back to
an earlier outlook.
