Replacing Office XP Standard with Professional

N

Noel S Pamfree

I have a copy of Office XP Standard which was no my pc when purchased (OEM).
I have now bought a copy of Office XP Professional.

I have two questions:

Q1: To replace the original I assume I have to uninstall the original copy
and then reinstall the Professional edition?

Q2: I have kept my programs up to date with the patches and Service Packs.
If I uninstall the standard version will I lose all of these and have to
download them again?

Many thanks,

Noel

A1: Yes it is generally wise to uninstall everything and reinstall again using a complete prof product unless you want to get your hands dirty and edit the registry to allow you to insert new 25 digit product serial. Please make sure your office poduct is not an upgrade version otherwise you will have the usual problem of installation not able to find the qualifying product. To change serial number read this:
http://www.petri.co.il/change_office_xp_cd_key.htm

If you are likely to use your OEM product somewhere else then it is a good idea to keep its serial number safe {somewhere} on the CD itself. There are tools to get serial from the system. Try this:
http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml

A2: Again yes. If you uninstall everything and reinstall again, you will also have to re-install service packs. Alternatively, you could slipstream your office product (professional) before intsalling to save you the problem of installation ASKING YOU TO INSERT ORIGINAL CD. To slipstream Office read this:
http://www.petri.co.il/office_system_2003_sp_slipstreaming.htm
