After I reply to a message and hit "send" I want the original
message to go away. But instead, the original message stays open and I
have to manually close it. Where is the setting to fix this?

Unfortunately, there isn't one.

Barry's right in terms of open windows. But I can suggest an an alternative
to this. If you read your emails in the Preview pane (i.e., don't
double-click and open an item) and then click Reply (complete the reply, and
send it), then there's simply no original email to close since it wasn't
opened in a separate window.

Thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately the policy in our company
does not allow the use of the Preview Pane. Thanks again.

Why for heavens sake? And how do they enforce it, since you cannot lock the
view down?

If they are concerned about malware, this may be an issue in outlook, but
not in Entourage for goodness sake. There are preference settings to prevent
the download of external data - in 2004 these are blocked by default, unless
you manually collect them.

This sounds very much like the last resort of the incompetent on behalf of
your IT staff - they can't be bothered to look into a subject so they impose
an unenforceable global ban!

Computers are tools to be USED! They are supposed to make life easier for
you, not become one more hurdle to overcome in the daily grind. What a bunch
of idiots :(

Sorry for sounding off like this, I know it's not your fault, but such
sheer, mind numbing, stupidity, laziness and incompetence gets right up my
nose!

If you are using Office 2004 this is not an issue as all external images are
blocked until you either manually click to download them or place their
address in the "trusted" list or domain.

Outlook 2003 on the PC side has similar protections in the latest service
pack. Your I.T. bunch must be using an old or unpatched Outlook setup or
are otherwise incompetent.
